Biotechnology and Food Technology :Differences and similarities.

Biotechnology is used everywhere, from pharmaceuticals, forensics to farming and had been used since the dawn of civilisation. What began as recipes for production of various food like bread and cheese is now used in various industries to produce genetically engineered plants, animals, microbes and medicine. Modern biotechnology deals with manipulating DNA but classical biotechnology began even before the discovery of gene and chromosome.

Modern biotechnology began around the end of nineteenth century when Mendel's work on genetics was completed and other microbial processes had been founded by Koch, Pasteur and Lister. The beginning of twentieth century marked the use of Biotechnology by industries like the automobile industry to produce paint solvents and acetone and the agriculture sector to produce genetically modified plants.

Food Biotechnology is an umbrella term covering a vast variety of processes for using living organisms such as microbes, plants, animals or just any part of these organisms to produce new or developed food products.

Gregor Mendel's contribution on genetic principles of transfer of traits from parent plant to its progeny were used to yield many hybrid crops such as corn and wheat in which certain traits could be selected to increase plant yield and such breeding methods led to significant increase in plant production and led to the current modern farming practices.

In today's world the primary goal of food biotechnology are to provide a more abundant, less expensive and nutritious food supply in order to meet the demands of food with the growing population.

Both are two different courses but at it's core food technology Is a subset of biotechnology.

Biotechnology has many subsets such as Industrial biotechnology, medical biotechnology, plant/agricultural biotechnology, animal biotechnology including food biotechnology.

Biotechnology offers both academical and industrial research and development whereas food technology focuses more on the food industry and researches related to it.

Both are closely related to each other yet are different in various aspects and those who are interested in food should pick food technology and consider it's pro's and con's while comparing it with other closely related courses.
